A former chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and public affairs commentator, Engr. Rawlings Ejizu says that zoning of political offices betrays the concept and beauty of democracy.
Chief Eiizu told news men in Owerri weekend that zoning breeds mediocrity as those who emerge out of such arrangement are product of selection and not election which is the hall mark of democracy.
There can be no gainsaying the fact that any political office holder especially that of a state governor that got into office through a zoning platform cannot resist the temptation to focus attention on the zone he represents at the expense of others, Chief Ejizu stated.
He wondered when the so called Imo charter of equity which was a PDP minority decision had been put to practice since every Imo gubernatorial election had been keenly contested by candidates from the three zones of the state.
The ex PDP Chieftain reiterated that it was the excellent performance of Gov Rochas Okorocha that lured him to APC adding that he had had no reason ever to regret his defection.
Chief Ejizu further stated that what Imolites have gained since the advent of the rescue mission administration in the area of infrastructural development and free education to mention a few would not have been possible if the state had fallen to the antics of the zoning godfathers.
Responding to a question on who occupies the Douglas House come 2019, Chief Ejizu stated that in the world over, the youths are taking over the reigns of leadership stressing that since the present administration had put Imo State on the fast lane of development, it would demand a man with youthful vigour to follow up the pace.
Chief Ejizu gave his full support for the endorsement of the Chief of staff, Ugwumba Uche Nwosu for Imo state governor 2019 stressing that he saw in the young man the necessary requirements and capability to govern the state to ensure continuity of the good programs of the present administration such as the free education from primary so the tertiary levels.
The public affairs commentator further told newsmen that Ugwumba Nwosu being an in-law to the sitting governor is a happenstance which did not offend any section of the electoral law of the Federal Republic of Nigeria pointing out that in America, President George Bush Jnr. became president of the United States of America after his father had ruled the country as president and Americans voted massively for Mrs. Hillary Clinton in the last American presidential election not minding that she had previously occupied the white House as first Lady.
What Imolites require now as they look forward to 2019 is to shun politics of sectionalism and its attendant mediocrity and pick the right candidate for governor which Ugwumba Nwosu rightly represents, Engr. Ejizu concluded.
